Tips to Boost Gratitude Today!

Scientific research reinforces what life experience suggests; it’s impossible to feel stress and tension when you're feeling grateful. Studies show it's a sound health practice to focus on what you are thankful for, rather than dwell on things you think you lack.

The calming part of the nervous system is triggered by thoughts and feelings of gratitude, and works to make you feel refreshed and happy.

An
American Psychological Association quote adds to this good news. "A grateful heart is a healthier heart and a thankful outlook can lead to improved outcomes in heart-failure patients.”

Don't you think practicing gratitude is worth a try?

To that End, I Offer Tips to Boost Gratitude Today!

Journal about gratitude and count your blessings. My investigation of the facts indicates gratitude heals, energizes, and transforms lives. Professor Robert A. Emmons from UC Davis, a science of gratitude expert, said expressing gratitude “can lower blood pressure, improve immune function and facilitate more efficient sleep. Gratitude reduces lifetime risk for depression, anxiety and is a key resiliency factor in the prevention of suicide."

Colors of Joy Provides Many Activities to Help You Draw Gratitude into Your Life

Amp up journal writings’ benefits with color. Use colored pens and markers to record your ideas about the goodness in your daily life. Perhaps you feel you have little time to write in a journal daily. Keep it simple. Take a few minutes, night or day, to do a colorful bullet list of things you are thankful about. Another choice is to do a mental gratitude list. Whatever you decide, know that colors bypass reason and work at the sensory level to make journal writing fun and transformative.

Meditate about gratitude. Define the word in your mind's eye and reflect on examples in your life. The definition I like best is an original, "gratitude is the human quality of being thankful, including readiness to show appreciation and kindness toward ourselves and others." How do you define it?

Pamper yourself to make grateful feelings multiplyShower yourself with kindness. Joy and thankfulness are plentiful, when you are compassionate with yourself. Self-care has a ripple effect, and helps you respond to others in a loving way. See this for additional self-care tips.

Appreciate much and take nothing for granted. Life and the people in it owe you nothing. Treat every person and pleasant thing anyone does for you as an unexpected treasure. Look at your work, play, home, health, and social interactions as blessings in your life.

Use your eyesight, hearing, sense of smell, taste, and touch, you "come alive" in the present moment. Practice cherishing and accepting things just as they are. Do you know what I mean?

LIVE RIGHT NOW!

As the baseball player Wade Boggs said, "
Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens, not by what life brings us, but the attitude we bring to life."

Make the most of every day. Rather than complain the glass is half empty, see the glass as filled with stuff to meet your needs. Don't put off your enjoyment for another day. Reserve time to do fun things like walk or hike in nature, play a favorite sport or game, or undertake a project you’ve been putting off doing. When you complete it, give thanks. Be mindful to balance business and pleasure; it creates warm, fuzzy feelings in you.

Display humility and stand with others. When you have a realistic conception of your assets and strengths, and possess the ability to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, and gaps in knowledge, you are on the high road to personal satisfaction. Combine this with the aspect of being interested in what others have to say and willingness to learn from them. All add up and make you a gratitude winner.

Give to others to multiply gratitude. Make a donation to your favorite charity or prepare a meal for someone less fortunate than yourself. Sharing your money, time, food, and clothing with others helps you open your heart more fully.

Be generous with kind words and gestures too. Let your thoughts be intentionally appreciative, and give others the benefit of the doubt. In the long run, it helps you be peaceful and empathetic, instead of judgmental.

Thank you dear reader for your visit. I’m grateful to be alive, and realize none of us know what tomorrow will bring. That's why I set the intention to celebrate gratitude today, and I wish you would too!

My quote for today is "I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." Maya Angelou

Affirmations and the Law of Attraction

Ever wish you knew a secret that would help you improve your sense of well-being, and even draw abundance into your life? Stay tuned and I'll explain.

The Law of Attraction is a belief that "like attracts like," and can be applied to your thoughts, both conscious and unconscious. What you think about or dwell on multiples, and colors your emotions, beliefs, and actions. What you project is going to happen in the future, affects how you respond to life experiences. Saying affirmations aloud and using the law of attraction may help even those with doom and gloom outlooks, and convert negative attitudes to much more positive ones.

Wayne Dyer knew this. An excerpt from his book, The Power of Intention, published through Hay House on the Belief net Website explains:

Step 1: See the world as an abundant, providing, friendly place.

Step 2: Affirm: I attract success and abundance into my life because that is who I am.
Step 3: Stay in an attitude of allowing.

Step 4: Use your present moments to activate thoughts that are in harmony with the seven faces of intention: creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, abundance, and peaceful receptivity.

I agree with Dyer and use affirmations and the law of attraction in my life and work with much success. I have seen others make strides using them and scientific studies show this to be true.
I notice that as soon as I sit down to create new affirmations, it helps ground, center, and nurture me. Saying affirmations aloud nourishes those vulnerable, tender spots in me that need attention. It also helps me focus on the blessings in my life, and set the intention to aim for the very best that life has to offer.
Affirmations reinforce our resolve, and suggest those things we want and long for are already manifested in our lives. That's why I write or recite affirmations often... to look at the richness, love, and beauty that already exists in daily living.
Affirmations are a good way for me to reduce fear of the unknown, doubts, overwhelm, and "not good enough feelings" that come up on occasion.

Here's powerful affirmations just for you dear readers...

"I learn new things about myself daily, and realize personal growth is a grand adventure."

"My relationships are fluid and rewarding."

"I respect and treasure others."

"Each person I know helps expand my understanding and knowledge of what I want to allow in my life."

"I am emotionally available to others and listen with an attentive ear and open heart."

"I see and appreciate the goodness in each moment."

"I take time to slow down, meditate, and participate in self-care activities daily."

"I treat myself with lovingkindness every day."

"I take excellent care of my mind, body, and spirit and I live happy and free."

Take a moment to order Colors of Joy on my Website. It guides you through activities that use the law of attraction. It supplies instructions for composing and using affirmations for self care and life enrichment.

Reduce Clutter to Create Tranquility at Home.

Reduce Clutter to Create Tranquility at Home

Do you frequently feel out of sorts because your household lacks order? How often have you searched for car keys, papers, or a sweater, but couldn't find one or the other? Struggle no more. This blog provides information about free or inexpensive ways to get a handle on clutter, locate Missing in Action Items, and simplify your lifestyle.

1. The first step to change is to admit that clutter and disarray exists. As an example, I'll use my past experience. When I took a close look at my old thinking around my stashes of magazines and books, kitchen utensils, and the like, I began to understand myself better. Instead of shaming myself about times I needed things around me to feel good about myself, I decided to let go of self-judgment. All that did was keep me locked into guilt and inaction. Take it from me, the best thing I did for myself was to just be an observer of my thinking and actions. And this is how I did it.

Every day for a week I wrote in a journal about what I did or didn't do to clean up my living space. I recorded how often untidiness, lost item searches, and stress from things being out of place zapped my energy. Writing got this stuff out of my body and onto the page and made it more real and manageable.

I also wrote in my journal about whether I thought putting off household tasks actually saved time for another project or impeded my overall progress. I made sure to record even the tiniest accomplishment, as it served as a morale booster. So make sure to list and even brag to yourself about every positive step.

Procrastination or failure to own household tasks (wishing and manipulating so someone I live with would do it for me) eventually led to running short of clean underwear and dishes. It also made me feel bad about myself. Slip ups (pun intended) like this made me cranky. Eventually I realized it just wasn't worth it!

Don't abandon the ship and your dream to create a tranquil home, just because it requires time and effort.

"Be proactive and conquer the declutter challenge. In the end, you'll dance the happy dance." Nancy Andres

2. Get into the habit of taking 10 minutes a day toward the beginning of the day to make your bed, fluff pillows, and take out garbage. You'll be amazed at how doing these simple things upgrades your outlook on law and order.

3. Use baby steps and take another 10 minutes a day to organize. Donate, give away, or throw out unusable items. You know, they're the things you haven’t even looked at within the last year like old socks and shoes, lightly worn but ill-fitting clothing, books you never want to read again, and household goods you have no use for. Give them to your favorite charity and help the needy. Recycling cuts down on the amount of things you have collecting dust, and reduces the amount of junk dumped into a landfill. Then, the next day organize that junk drawer in your kitchen, nightstand, or magazine rack. You'll find that these 10 minute blocks of cleaning add up.

4. Mop up kitchen and bathroom spills on counters and floors as soon as they occur. Keep little messes from spreading.

5. Place a hamper or bin in your kitchen and bathroom for soiled towels and clothing so they won't be overlooked when you're gathering stuff for the wash. Share KP duty with all members of your household. Even the smallest child can take part. Remember this is good training for self-sufficiency.

6. Tackle one half of each closet at a time. First off, arrange clothes neatly on hangers and button top button or arrange skirt or pants correctly on the hanger.

Create your own management system. Some people like to arrange clothes according to category like causal, dress, and exercise gear. Others prefer to sort by colors, and still others like to place all shirts, pants, and outwear into separate sections. If your closet doesn't have space for hanging items, invest a few dollars on hooks, wall racks, or a free standing wardrobe. Put this contraption where it's needed. A great place to hang outdoor clothing is on a hat stand in the mud room. If you don't have a room like that, put extra hooks on the inside of your bathroom or bedroom doors. You can hang bathrobe, pajamas, hats, belts, pocketbooks, or other items that won’t be damaged if you store them this way.

7. Use clear storage bins and racks for shoes, bags, and odds and ends whenever possible. They are easy to locate and take up less space than those on hooks or racks.

8. Make it a rule of thumb that if you haven’t worn or used an item for a year or more, it comes up for review. Whenever I release something and donate it to my favorite charity or give it to a friend, I feel lighter. I also notice that the clothes I keep are more visible and are easier to keep neat.

8. Be a mindful consumer, when shopping for new clothing or household goods. Before I take home any item, I pause to think about whether I've got something similar at home. I ask myself whether it is an impulse purchase, or do I really need it? If I decide to buy a particular item, I make sure to release an item I already own. If I get something new, I put an older item in the rag pile, donate it, or give it away.

In addition, check out this article from the Los Angeles Times, an interview by Bonnie McCarthy of Peter Walsh, author of Lose the Clutter, Lose the Weight.
'Clutter is never about the stuff' — an organization expert explains why (and what to do about it)'.

Another quotation for today is “Don't own so much clutter that you will be relieved to see your house catch fire.”

Smart Ways to Green Your Lifestyle

Earth Day is tomorrow, and I've been reviewing possible ways to double up on my efforts to live greener. I assure you most of my eco-friendly ideas can be implemented easily, but make a big difference in protecting the air, water, soil, and living beings in a world that struggles to retain its quality of life.

Unless each of us takes a more active role to halt global warming, we and the planet are in deep trouble.

Even if you don't think this is true, the steps I suggest saves money, conserves natural resources, and are simple to accomplish.

Start from where you are today. When you embark on a green adventure, you're sure to find that many of these actions simplify living by removing clutter from your office, home, and mind. Join the green crowd and make behavioral changes that you and your family can be proud about.

1. Curtail impulse spending by being more mindful and shopping with a list. Make new purchases only if you really need the item. This practice reduces the amount of clutter you accumulate and cuts down on the amount of junk that’s eventually dumped into a landfill.

2. Plant a tree. This action fights global warming big time, by taking carbon dioxide from the air and cuts down on both heating and cooling costs. Trees also hold the earth in place, prevents soil erosion, runoff, and improves water quality. Trees make your home more desirable, adding as much as 15% to its resale value.

3. Study labels. Don't assume that if a household product is marked "natural" or "green" it is.  Commercial cleaning products can contain limonene (the chemical that gives it a lemon scent). This toxic chemical hurts the lining of your lungs and environment, when it enters the air and water stream. Lemon scented dusting polish can react with other gases in the air to make formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen. Choose fragrance free products or mix up a homemade, environmentally safe olive oil or jojoba oil scent- free furniture polish instead. Buy minimally packaged biodegradable ingredients in bulk. Products made from these ingredients can be stored indefinitely, conserving gasoline, time, energy, and money.

4. Switch from chemical cleaning agents to household staples like soap and water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and elbow grease. Here's an excellent recipe for homemade lemon oil furniture duster and polish from Annie B. Bond.  Lemon Oil Furniture Duster and Polish

5. Carry a reusable stainless steel or glass water bottle instead of reaching for a one-use plastic bottle. Our landfills are overflowing with toxic additives from plastic bottles. Plastic doesn't biodegrade for at least a thousand years. Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. That figure doesn't include the oil needed for bringing those bottles to market and the gas you use to get it to your home or office. If you drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day from the tap, it costs about 49 cents per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400. Here's more about H2O. How to Save Water, Money, and Empower Yourself

6. Reuse, recycle, and conserve daily. Carry reusable shopping bags to the market, department stores, specialty shops or anywhere and everywhere you shop. If you do use plastic bags for veggies and fruit, reuse them (wash and air dry after each use). Hang clothes to dry. Use cloth instead of paper to mop up spills, dust, diaper baby, and to replace paper napkins, etc. Here's an example of one way I re-use and recycle.

6. Join up with Leonardo DiCaprio and many of us, who agree that climate change is occurring at an alarming, accelerated pace. We believe it's important for us as individuals and in groups to work to reduce our carbon footprint. Here's a link to a blog post I wrote about the topic last year. Divest from Fossil Fuels/Reinvest in Eco-friendly Ones. Here's a link to the DiCaprio Foundation, that addresses the same issue. Leonardo DiCaprio Joins-More-than-400-Institutions-Pledging-to-Divest-from-Fossil-Fuels/.

7. Take an earth-saving moment to reflect about how many new ways you can live greener.  Read this post, published a few weeks ago, for additional ideas.  Eat Less Meat and Save Our Planet.

Did you pick up a new green tip or two today? Please comment below. The more we exchange ideas the better off the planet will be!

The quote for today is from Robert Swan, Explorer and Environmentalist:

“The greatest danger to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it ... The last great exploration on earth is to survive on earth. So as I gaze out the window into my future, I hope to see Antarctica in my midst. I only hope that our children’s children will see it in theirs too. When you gaze out of the window into your future, what do you see?"

Aerobic Exercise and Optimum Health

photo from www.nancyandreswriter.com

I came across a study that shows a direct correlation between aerobic exercise and brain cell health and even regeneration. You can find a link below to see the abstract.

I'm grateful that this report gives me new impetus to amp up my exercise routine and get outdoors more often for aerobics. I love to work out in a natural setting. I'm able to connect more directly to a power greater than myself, when I'm in nature. I'm not a person who likes to go to a gym for treadmill walking. My preference is to commune with mountains, flora and fauna, streams, a river, or sea. I love to hike and walk.

What's your take on the study and what motivational techniques work for you to keep you active and vitally alive?

Which kind or kinds of aerobic exercise work for you? Swimming, biking, hiking, dancing, walking, running or something else? Remember... anything that makes you happy as well as revs up your engine, will improve blood flow to the brain and is good for your spirit. Let me know which aerobic exercise you like and why.

My quote for the day is:

"Another good reducing exercise consists in placing both hands against the table edge and pushing back. " Robert Quillen-American Journalist
