renew?

I like to be productive and thrive on activities that create order and enable me to complete projects at work, home, and in my personal and social life. That being said, today I want to take a break from "doing" to relax, restore my spirit, and just loaf. However, this is a challenge for me. My underlying work ethic tells me to keep on pursuing my goals, striving to fulfill my obligations, and proceed with whatever tasks I think are on my plate for the day. Luckily, an inner knowing I call my wise woman, tells me to take time to look at the clouds, savor a moment of stillness, and breathe.

The quote for today came from www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/free-time.
Perhaps my writing and the quote will encourage you to free up some time to write back to me. I'm interested in learning what things help motivate you to create space to relax.

“It has occurred to me that the thing you have, that all men have enough of, is perhaps the thing that you care for the best, and that is your leisure - the leisure you have to think; the leisure you have to be let alone; the leisure you have to throw the plummet into your mind, and sound the depth and dive for things below.”
― James A. Today, I want to share about one, Ron Mead. I found out that he combines his skills as teacher, speaker, and author to support his mission. "To raise the literacy level by encouraging All people to read more and to overcome common writing and grammar errors." Please check out his website to learn more about this worthwhile goal: www.ronmead.net

Quote for the day:
“Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility. The start of a New Year creates space for me to set an intention to be more fully available (emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, energetically) to myself and others than I was able to be last year.

Upon reflection, I surmise that in order to move forward toward this goal, I may need to practice non-judgement, kindness, gratitude, and living in the moment. Let me tell you why...

My default setting for new adventures is, at first, fear. With non-judgement, I can acknowledge my feelings, check to see whether my fear is justified, and/or consult with a trusted friend to hash things out. With kindness, I can be gentle with myself and others in any situation, as I encourage us along. With gratitude I can appreciate progress and recognize the power inherent in learning by trial and error. By living in the moment, I can truly honor myself and those I interact with, by planting my mind, heart, attention, and energy into the soil of whatever I am involved in. Here are some ways I've thought to work on this.

Do only one thing at a time.

Plan for one day at a time to reduce the "doing too much" syndrome.

Listen to my secret longings, dreams, and preferences when determining time-choices.

Deal with minor irritations before they turn into explosions.

Consider others' needs, but don't forget to focus on my priorities.

Laugh at myself and lighten up.

State boundaries directly and simply, without attachment to another person's reaction.

Refrain from offering advice to anyone who doesn't ask for it.

Reserve time and energy for exercise, relaxation, spiritual pursuits, and fun activities.

Practice flexibility by being willing to regroup, re-frame, recycle, or shelve.

Act only when fully cognizant about my motives.

Appreciate all my blessings and acknowledge the wondrous gift of being vitally alive. Happy, Joyful and Serene New Year! In Peace and Health, Nan

Holiday Musings + Meaning in the Season

This year, I am purposely taking gift-giving in slow gear, setting the intention to consciously plan how much time, energy, and resources I use to select gifts for those on my gift list. This feels right to me, especially when I purchase items that don't exceed my budget and dispense with ego, which tells me to select gifts that may be received favorably or draw attention to me. Today, I look for gifts that serve a utilitarian as well as a pleasurable function. And if my gift is for a child, a toy that adheres to safety standards and is durable rather than flashy, is of the utmost importance to me.

I find many reasons to be grateful this holiday season and my "raised awareness" attitude is one. I am grateful that despite all the naysayers, we live in a country where there is free speech, an opportunity to better ourselves, and free will. I'm grateful that today I know I'm responsible for my own well-being and happiness and take measures to satisfy my own needs. I'm grateful that I care deeply about others and do service work that helps others and is fulfilling to me . I'm grateful I have a career that I love and a soul mate to share my life with. I'm grateful for friends I hold dear and people in my life who accept me and cherish me just as I am. I'm grateful I know I have choices. Those choices include: how I conduct myself, what I believe and think, and how I live. Today I make the decision to live simply and mindfully, taking particular care about my carbon footprint. I set the intention daily to do my part to conserve mother earth and her resources as well as strive to be kind and loving with all the people I know. This is my holiday gift to myself and those I meet.

What are you grateful for and how do you show it?
The quote for today comes from http://Thinkexist.com

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” Anthony Robbins quotes (American advisor to leaders)

How do you celebrate the holiday season? Does this have meaning for you? I was in considerable pain last Nov. and at first, I tried conventional methods. I followed Dr's. orders and put my hand in a splint, had an RX, and took an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication, plus rested my hand and wrist. I went to two different acupuncturists, which turned out to be the wrong treatment; it was too harsh for acute symptoms. After I had Nerve Conduction Studies, the doctor determined I had severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A hand surgeon recommended an operation. That did not sit right with me and I realized I was determined to explore other options. I finally discovered a treatment that came out of a study from the U of Penn. which is an effective treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
http://www.mycarpaltunnel.com/?c1=PPC&source=Google&kw=carpal

It has proven to lessen Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in me. I do 12 specific yoga poses that balance, stretch, and strenghten the upper extremities. These specific yoga exercises have been most curative. They are simple to do, very inexpensive (a yoga mat), and totally non-invasive. Below are links to both the study and device I wear at night while sleeping. It's called the carpal tunnel solution.

http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/280/18/1601.full.pdf

http://www.mycarpaltunnel.com/?c1=PPC&source=Google&kw=carpal

I am most grateful that I'm out of pain and have a sense of satisfaction. I have no favorites this year, but do want to see it all. How about you? Are you going to watch? My favorite way to do it is to get comfortable in my pj's and warm robe, snuggle up with my honey, and let the festivities commence. She says she's super-sensitive to caffeine and didn't realize some green tea HAS CAFFEINE.

Here's the skinny...

Green tea is naturally caffeinated (not as much caffeine as coffee but caffeinated for sure). The tea bag or box has to say decaffeinated or else it has caffeine. And don't believe the servers in restaurants-many know little about the difference. If you care about the amount of caffeine you consume, you need to check for yourself. Mayo clinic says there is 26 mg of caffeine in Stash Premium Green, 6 oz (180 ml) compared to 140-200 mg in brewed caffeinated coffee.

Other interesting information available on the web.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/AN01211

My quote for today follows:
Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves - slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. ~Thich Nat Hahn

Summer Travel, Fun in the sun and good to be home

Elephant Butte, NM Summer Fun...I did some traveling this summer and this is a scenic place I enjoyed. Self-care routines like cooking nourishing meals and exercising beat out blogging.

Well, here I am back at blogger. Happy to have the few moments to spare and glad I blog only when I want to. What freedom!

I've noticed that some bloggers lose interest in one blog and move on to other things. Are there any out there who want to share the "Why" this happens? Please comment if you can. I'm curious as to why one would put the effort into blog set-up and posting and cut it loose, without an explanation (well, that's what I think, when I see a blog that doesn't have a closure statement).

Until next time...

Pins and Needles, In Between, Powerlessness

This is a post about the in-between. Did you ever have moments of vagueness, confusion, and uncertainty? This is one of my most vivid and unsettling. My husband needs an operation. I am sure that it is necessary and will help his condition, but my "agita" doesn't stem only from fear of the unknown.

I am dismayed that a condition that was supposed to have been corrected by surgery in 2001 has reasserted itself. That old powerless state is here once again. Drat!

In order for me to have my wits about me when we go to see the surgeon today, I need to vent right now. I know I can't control my husband's physical condition, but I certainly can send positive vibes his way. I don't like it that he has to undergo this operation and be in the hospital, but if I accept the reality of the situation, I may have less stress, resistance, and find an opening to see the opportunities for healing and health. Yes, I need to find hope and sound thinking. Are there any of you out there who face similar challenges and want to share about it?

Quote for the day-
"God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference." The Serenity Prayer

PS. For those who can help with blogger quirks-this post was written and will be posted on 2/17/10, but I used a draft from 1/30/10 that was taking up space on blogger. I'm not sure what date will appear as the publishing date. If it doesn't print the actual publishing date, how do I change it? After the holidays, I felt motivated to go full steam ahead on my career writing and this left no time for you, dear blog. Since I'm in no race to be the best blog in the lot or the most prolific, I'm feeling no pressure to write weekly. I do enjoy it-so back I am.

My quote for today is: "Anyone who has got any pleasure at all from nature should try to put something back. Wow! What beauty and fun. Living inland on the desert, as I do now, I was thirsty to soak up the grandeur of the sea and nourish my spirit by being away from the familiar and witnessing the lush variety of fauna and flora in our 50th state.
A few interesting sights were Foster Botanical Garden, ʻIolani Palace, and Ala Moana Shopping Center (visited on black Friday) on Oahu. I relish people-watching and this location was the ultimate place to take note of Honolulu's diversity.
I was fascinated by the rain forest and gorgeous orchids at the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden in Hilo and awed by Kilauea's volcanic splendor on the Big Island. Maui and Kauai were two other lovely islands I visited.
My trip provided time and space to relax, explore, learn and expand my horizons. I'm glad I went and grateful to be home.

Today's quote was found on Brainy Quote http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/travel.html

"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." Gratitude fills me up for good health and joy in my life. I'm blessed by sharing love with a special someone and appreciate my career, friends and family, and a calling to serve a Higher purpose in my life. I am thankful I live in a free country, where I create the space and time to make new discoveries about myself and others and be more truly who I was meant to be. And I'm grateful for blogging, which gives me the opportunity to write down how I feel and what I think.

Here's the quote for today:

Half our mistakes in life arise from feeling where we ought to think, and thinking where we ought to feel." This remarkable novel from British author, Chris Cleave, is the ultimate in fast paced drama, suspense, character development, and entertainment. The writer's story telling ability and vivid characters drew me in and captured my attention from the first sentence on. I have told everyone I know about it and give it a thumbs up, here on my blog.
At various points in the story, I was amazed, delighted, horrified, and saddened by what I learned or found myself validating about the human condition. I can identify with pieces of all the main characters, seeing my humanity in each. I am now a new fan of Chris Cleave and hope you will be too. I tried to give you an idea of how powerful the writing is without giving away the story. Check it out. It's well worth the effort.
Two quotes today, because both resonate with me.

"Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to." The writing and story hooked me from the first sentence which is, "Most days I wish I was a British pound coin instead of an African girl."

Today's quote comes from Jack Kornfield, the author of the book, A Path With Heart. "There are two parallel tasks in a spiritual life. One is to discover selflessness, the other is to develop a healthy sense of self. Both sides of that apparent paradox must be fulfilled for us to awaken."

Enjoy a lovely evening.

Advice from Chris Brogan, Next Level of Blogging, Willingness

Willingness to learn is a quality I admire and thanks to Erika Dreyfus' Practicing Writer Newsletter, my mind had food for thought. Or Be?

This post was started on 10/24/05 in the evening. There’s little going on in my outside world-nowhere to go, no people to see. For a moment, I felt empty. Then I remembered that I’m not a human doing. I’m a human being. Can you relate? Although I was extremely productive in career endeavors this week, I did my part to contribute to my overall well-being, and was of service (I volunteer to help newbie’s learn the ropes in a group I attend), I had little time left over to kick back and relax.

As of tonight, I haven’t made any definite plans with anyone. Sigh. Sigh. How lucky can I get? I am free to spend time pampering myself, do nothing, peruse the newspaper, catch up on sleep, chat with friends, and be in nature or meet up with whomever, if and when I choose.

Now I'm continuing on Sunday morning, 10/25/09, thanks to the save now button (which I used to save my post as a draft on 10/24) and edit post button (to open the draft on 10/25 and add more).
.

Technology has made communication, business, and living easier in some respects and more isolating in others. Therefore, it’s up to me to reach out, if I feel the need for connection. Blogging was one method I had hoped would help me do that. I have posted ten times, with four of you who have corresponded with me. Great start, I think.
However, what I needed to do most to take care of myself was to communicate with an unlimited Source of comfort and renewal (Divine Being). I'm grateful that reaching out helped me come to peace and serenity.

The quote for today is: “Every now and again take a good look at something not made with hands-a mountain, a star, the turn of a stream. There will come to you wisdom and patience and solace and, above all, the assurance that you are not alone in the world.” Sidney Lovett

<link rel='related' href='http://obloggernewbie.blogspot.com' title='Love of Nature, Human Being, What to do? The movie is a fantasy, taking place at a time when everyone in the world tells the truth except for one misfit in the film industry (played by Gervais). After discovering he can lie, Gervais tries to use this knowledge to further his goals. Others in the cast include Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Jonah Hill, Louis C.K. as well as John Hodgman, Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, and Jeffrey Tambor.
Although Invention of Lying shows the struggle between lying and truth telling and what force wins out, this interesting premise isn't developed well. The writers miss an opportunity to compare it to current political or economic situations in American society. Gervais and Robinson select a love relationship to illustrate their message. Their buildup and technique is to repeat the same joke over and over and I sighed in relief by the time the film ends. Readers out there. I'm back at my computer after a few days off. A dear relative came for a visit and my husband and I played host and hostess as well as tour guides. We went out fun-ing at the Patagonia, AZ Fall Festival and Nature Conservancy on Saturday and our community fair on Sunday. Both fairs had lots of arts'n'crafts, trinkets, music, ethnic and regional foods, and tons of people. It was great being outdoors in perfect weather and sharing the day with loved ones.

Before I go any further, here's the quote for today. "You grow up the day you have the first real laugh at yourself." Ethel Barrymore. I'll write more about this after the "break," as I need to practice using the "break."

Yes. It worked. For those who don't know, there's an icon up at the top of the blogspot post composing space that looks like a sheet of paper with a chunk taken out of the middle. This area has jagged edges that run horozontially and looks exactly like a break.
Now on to my pondering.

I agree with Ethel Barrymore (Oscar winning actress for None But the Lonely Heart in 1944), who was born August 15, 1879 and died June 18, 1959. Laughing at myself means that I choose to take what I do or don't do less seriously. Well, at least treat myself kindly so that I don't feel shame and am motovated to improve my lot, stick with it, and grow.

Quote, Bonus to blog, Learning Curve, Blog addition, Risk and Grow

I’ve decided to offer you, dear reader, a bonus. What’s that, you may ask?
Each time I post, I’ll include a quote that may or may not directly apply to the subject I’m writing about, but hopefully will be thought provoking or stimulate some insight about learning curves.

Yesterday, I took little nan (my inner child) to her new dentist, for the purpose of getting a new crown. Little nan had met the dentist at her dental check-up a few weeks earlier and the young, energetic, professional was a big hit with little nan.
The first thing that Big Nan remembered to do, was to breathe deeply. She reminded herself to stay present in her body so that she could comfort little nan, when she got squirmy. She also needed to be in the now, because she asked questions of her dentist and dental technician that little Nan was afraid to ask. Big Nan and little nan found out yesterday that things can't change unless they do the footwork and risk doing things in a new way.

Here's the first quote folks...
"To be safe is to be afraid." – Coyote, in a Crow Legend

Contact with my inner self through the writing process

Last night I attended my writing group. It took two men and major equipment to cut it down and remove the roots. The tree was so gigantic that it was infringing on our neighbor's property (her chimney), loomed closer and closer to the gas bar-b-que, and rested on our roof. The green monster shed at the slightest hint of a breeze and although it was beautiful in bloom and did provide some much needed shade, I was relieved and sad to see it go. The blossoms, droppings, and sharp smaller branches fell off at different times during the year and landed on our patio, other shrubs, and made a total mess of our backyard. But, I remember times I glanced at the Palo Verde out of my bedroom window and had a light heart. It seems like it grew from a little stick of a thing to a massive out of control monster only in the last few years My husband had the dubious pleasure of raking the muck and mess and he's celebrating one less job to do. I've provided the before photo. Create abundance and peace in your life today and your karma will spread positive energy around.

Adventures in blogging up close and detailed

Blogging adventures up close and personal

Early this morning I discovered how to change the template colors on my blogspot (my last post mentioned that I didn’t care for the green that was in my original layout). By clicking the tab on layout in the dashboard and clicking again on font and color, I replaced the green. When I was through making my choice, I clicked save. Whee. What a relief.
I also figured out how to drag and rearrange individual portions of this blogspot.
Blogger.com (my host's address is http://www.blogger.com) provides help articles, user discussions, and forums. Blogger is a free blog publishing tool from Google. So get ready world….even though I feel like I’m in blogging Kindergarten, I’m determined to go for a blogging spin.
What were your first experiences learning something new (it doesn’t have to be about blogging) and how did you overcome obstacles to learning? This is for real...my first effort to communicate with you out there. Exhilarating and daring to do this without knowing many of the concepts or skills involved in blogging. Please bear with me and, if you'd like, share some of your newbie blogging experiences with me. From past experiences, I've discovered I learn best if I don't feel pressured. I'll be going slowly (perhaps two or three posts a week) and my intention is to be courteous to you too.

I don't care for the green portion of this blog spot, but don't know how to change that.
